Melva Jean Knight, age 96, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on August 13, 1928, in Alamota, Kansas, the daughter of Jacob “Jake” and Charlotte Voos Hemel. She had been a resident of Scott City, Kansas, since 2006, moving from South Fork, Colorado.

She worked as a bookkeeper and receptionist for Woody’s, Stormont Construction, and at KN Energy towards the end of her career.

Melva was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the VFW, the Women’s Auxiliary, and the American Legion in Dighton, Kansas. She also enjoyed dancing and going bowling, even making it to national events yearly.

On June 12, 1947, Melva married Theodore Thomas Bailey in Dighton, Kansas. He passed away on August 22, 1976, in Dighton, Kansas.

On July 3, 1977, she married Freeman L. Knight in Holdrege, Nebraska. He passed away on April 26, 2021, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her Two Sons - Gary & Sherlynn Bailey of Scott City, Kansas, Jerry & Cindy Bailey of McPherson, Kansas, One step-daughter - Susan & David Thomas of Yuma, Colorado, Three Sisters - Ila Boone of Scott City, Kansas, Alice Rennison of Scott City, Kansas, Linda Barlow of Harper, Kansas, Eight Grandchildren, Twenty-one great-grandchildren, and Two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, three sisters, and a granddaughter.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas, with Pastor Steve Payne presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Park Lane Nursing Home Marketing & Events in care of Price and Sons, P.O. Box 552, Scott City, KS 67871.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, 401 S. Washington St., Scott City, Kansas.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.
