Shorty (Ray) Lara, 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 9, 2026, in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on August 21, 1949, in Lubbock, Texas, the son of John and Lily Sanchez Lara. He had been a resident of Scott City since 1958, moving from Lubbock, Texas, and was a retired carpenter. Shorty was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Scott City, Kansas, the American Legion, Eagles Lodge, and the VFW, all of Garden City, Kansas.
On September 5, 1987, he married Janie Russell in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She survives.
Survivors include his Wife - Janie Lara of Scott City, Kansas, Seven Daughters - Jennifer and Jamie Morris of Scott City, Kansas, Elizabeth Lara-Bruffett, Lilly Lara-Tamayo of Liberal, Kansas, Debbie Lara-Lopez of Dodge City, Kansas, Julie Lara-Marquez of Dodge City, Kansas, Amanda Lara of Garden City, Kansas, Shantice Lara of Dodge City, Kansas, Three Sons - John Lara of Scott City, Kansas, Ray John Lara of Garden City, Kansas, Johnny Lara of Atwood, Kansas, Two Sisters - Josie Trujillo of Grand Island, Nebraska, Lori Thalacker of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and One Brother - Joey Lara of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Twenty-Six Grandchildren, Forty-Four Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, One Son - David Lara, One Brother - Joe Lara, and Two Grandsons.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas, with Father Don Bedore presiding.
Visitation in Scott City, Kansas, will be from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2026, and 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Price & Sons Funeral Home, 401 S. Washington St., Scott City, Kansas, 67871.
Internment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.
